'Back on the train': Randal Grichuk, Ryne Nelson lead DBacks narrow win over Giants

Nelson strikes out career-high nine

After allowing five runs in the opening inning, Ryne Nelson settled down and led the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-5 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.

Nelson gave up seven hits and one walk in his 5 1/3 innings of work, striking out a career-high nine batters.

Grichuk delivered the go-ahead hit in the fifth inning, a two-run double that broke a 3-3 tie.

DBacks offense comes alive

Trailing 5-1, the DBacks scored three runs in the fourth inning to get back in the game.

Arizona then tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning on Carson Kelly's RBI single.

Grichuk's big night

Grichuk finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

He also made a nice defensive play in the eighth inning, throwing out Brandon Crawford at the plate to end the inning and preserve the lead.

Bullpen comes through

The DBacks bullpen was outstanding, allowing just one hit in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Taylor Clarke picked up the win, throwing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Mark Melancon earned his 10th save of the season.

Up next

The DBacks and Giants will play the second game of their three-game series on Tuesday night.

Arizona will send Merrill Kelly to the mound, while San Francisco will counter with Alex Cobb.
