Death Toll From Listeria Outbreak Tied to Boar's Head Deli Meat Rises to 9, CDC Says
More Than 40 People Sickened by Devastating Bacteria
The deadly listeria outbreak linked to Boar's Head deli meat has claimed another life, bringing the total death toll to nine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The outbreak, which began in late 2022, has sickened more than 40 people in 14 states, including Washington, where eight of the deaths have occurred.

Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. It can cause a variety of symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea.
Pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk for severe listeriosis, which can lead to meningitis, bloodstream infections, and even death.
Recalled Products: Check Your Fridge
The CDC advises consumers to avoid the following Boar's Head deli meat products, which have been recalled due to possible listeria contamination:
- Hard Italian Salami
- Genoa Salami
- Dry Sausage
- Pepperoni
- Summer Sausage
- Prosciutto
- Minced Garlic
If you have any of these products in your refrigerator, throw them away immediately. Do not eat them.
Symptoms and Treatment
Symptoms of listeriosis typically appear within 1-4 weeks of eating contaminated food.
Treatment involves antibiotics and may include hospitalization for severe cases.
