Boston Celtics Name Joe Mazzulla Permanent Head Coach
After a Successful Stint as Interim Coach
18th Head Coach in Franchise History
BOSTON, MA - The Boston Celtics have named Joe Mazzulla as their permanent head coach, after he led the team to a 42-17 record as interim coach following the suspension of Ime Udoka. Mazzulla becomes the 18th head coach in Celtics franchise history.
Mazzulla, 34, was a seven-year NBA veteran before joining the Celtics as an assistant coach in 2019. He took over as interim coach in September 2022 after Udoka was suspended for the season due to violations of team policies.
Under Mazzulla's leadership, the Celtics have been one of the top teams in the NBA, ranking first in the Eastern Conference and second overall in the league. They have also won 17 of their last 18 games.
"Joe has done an outstanding job as our interim head coach," Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens said in a statement. "He has a strong basketball IQ, a deep understanding of our team, and a proven ability to connect with our players. We are excited to have him lead our team moving forward."
Mazzulla is the youngest head coach in the NBA. He is also the first Italian-American head coach in NBA history.
